What is a Transfer Pump?

A transfer pump is a commercial fluid pump that utilizes basic mechanical principles to create a difference in pressure in order to move fluid from one location to another. The most common type of transfer pump is a sump pump, which is used to drain sitting water from private residences and businesses. However, transfer pumps are also often found on commercial fishing boats, as well as used for high-volume industrial and agricultural tasks such as irrigation systems. 

Choosing a Transfer Pump

There are many different kinds of transfer pumps on the market to suit different tasks. Transfer pumps can be portable, for small residential jobs, or permanently installed in industrial complexes. Pumps include gas transfer pumps, electric water transfer pump, or manually operated pumps. 

The most important factor to consider when choosing your transfer pump is whether you would best benefit from a submersible or non-submersible transfer pump. Non-submersible models are the most common type of transfer pump and are used to shift low-volumes of water between locations that are mostly dry. Submersible models, on the other hand, are best-suited for large jobs like pumping water from an irrigation pond, or out of a flooded basement. 

Always consider your transfer pump’s overall capacity. The power of that the pump’s motor is able to generate in horsepower, as well as the gallons per hour that the pump is able to move, will influence the pump’s capacity and pumping power.

Also consider the transfer pump’s longevity. Look for durable materials and sturdy mechanics that will withstand your intended workload on the pump. When choosing a submersible model, also be sure that the pump’s motor and electrical system are housed in a watertight compartment. 

Fuel and Industrial-Grade Transfer Pumps

Transfer pumps may also be used to move fuel, pesticides, and other industrial-grade products. However, not all transfer pumps are equipped to perform the transfer of these products. Thus, if you intend to use your transfer pump for these tougher products, you should choose a pump specifically designed for that function.

Using a Transfer Pump

A transfer pump uses an inlet and an outlet hose to direct water between locations. Most transfer pumps are compatible with standard garden hoses. To remove water, place the inlet hose in the source, and direct the outlet hose towards the destination. Then, turn on the pump, and go!
